Cycling the plateau: three flat loops with no shade
Updated July 2026 · 5 min read
The Dumrea plateau is flat and quiet, which makes it ideal for easy riding between lakes — but there is almost no shade, so ride early or late in summer. Three loops of roughly 12, 20, and 30 km, all on paved roads with lakes to stop at along the way.
Why it works
The roads are quiet, the gradients gentle, and a lake is never far away for a break or a swim. It is some of the easiest, most rewarding riding in central Albania.
The catch
Shade is the missing ingredient. In July and August the plateau bakes, so start at first light or ride in the last hours before dusk, and carry more water than you think you need.
Common questions
Is the terrain hard?
No — the plateau is mostly flat, so the loops are suitable for anyone comfortable on a bike for a couple of hours. Heat and lack of shade are the real challenge, not the climbs.
